THE MATERIALITY OF THE SURFACE
The exhibition, "The Materiality of the Surface", presents some forty experiments in building glass that present techniques and methods that change the perception of the glass through laminating layers with coloured and black and white patterns, textiles and metal, as well as screen printing. The exhibition is a presentation of a multidisciplinary artistic research project based at HDK - the School of Design and Crafts at the University of Gothenburg."In architecture the surface is often treated as something that divides space, where the materiality of the surface constitutes the boundary that defines spatiality. In Japanese cultural tradition space is conceived as a subjective perception, a physical experience and a changeable process. If space is changeable in our consciousness, the surface also becomes something impermanent." Kristina Fridh
The complex of problems surrounding undesired people’s view, climate and light regulation in all the glass structures that are built today is given insufficient attention, and this is highlighted by this research project. Using the Japanese visual arts as an example - space as a subjective perception - the conceptions of space are given new dimensions. The exhibition is linked to the Röhsska Museum's collection of Japanese objects.
A book with the title "The Materiality of the Surface" is being published in connection with the exhibition. It describes the various techniques and methods for experimenting with glass. Connections are made to changeable spaces in layers and different culture’s conceptions of space in a comparison between the ways that two Swedish and two Japanese architectural offices use different materials when forming space. The architectural offices are Wingårdhs and Claesson Koivisto Rune, and Kengo Kuma & Associates and SANAA, and the exhibition includes a multi-slide presentation of the four architectectural office’s buildings that shows how space has been formed in their architecture. The exhibition is being held in cooperation with the Röhsska Museum.
The exhibition runs from 6/10 to 29/11 2009.
Private view Tuesday 6/10/2009 at 18.00.
Welcome to the press viewing at 10.00 on Tuesday 6/10.
The research project "The Materiality of the Surface" has been principally funded by the Swedish Research Council and is based at HDK - the School of Design and Crafts at the University of Gothenburg. The project has been underway since 2006 and is part of artistic research and development work. The project consists of Kristina Fridh, project leader, architect and PhD and Thomas Laurien, product designer specialising in textile and pattern design and doctoral student at the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts, University of Gothenburg. Presenting a research project in any other way than through publications is an ongoing discussion, and the exhibition provides a forum for this discussion.
