Ett illustrerat ordboksepos

Text in dictionaries is neither novel based nor nonfiction. It comprises big parts of disconnected words and phrases next to other disconnected words and phrases. And there’s nothing else that connects them besides from the fact that they give information about other disconnected words and phrases. But what happens if one gets in mind there is something to read between the lines? Something that has meaning and soul. That was my starting point for my degree project called. Phrases, which are supposed to explain entries, started to interest me mainly because of their randomness. My goal was to collect a selection these and create a coherent story, without any contribution of my own words or editing the chosen ones.
The project resulted in an illustrated story with script based on selected phrases from a dictionary. The story is shown in its origin source, the dictionary, but in a redesigned version of it containing typography and packaging. The aim has been to create bigger interest for the dictionary as a source of knowledge, inspiration and entertainment by highlighting already existing qualities through text, images and design.

Texten i ordböcker är varken romantext eller hämtad från facklitteraturen. Den består till stora delar av lösryckta ord och fraser som placeras invid andra lösryckta ord och fraser. Och egentligen finns där ingen gemensam nämnare utom att de ger upplysningar om andra lösryckta ord och fraser. Men vad händer om man får för sig att det finns en mening att söka mellan raderna? Det var en tanke jag valde att vidareutveckla i mitt examensprojekt. Fraserna med uppgift att förklara uppslagsord i ett sammanhang kom att fascinera mig med anledning av sin slumpmässighet. Målet har därför varit att samla ihop ett urval av dessa och skapa en sammanhängande berättelse av dem, utan vare sig eget tillägg eller redigering av utvalt material.
Resultatet kom att bli en illustrerad bildberättelse med manus bestående av de utvalda fraserna. Berättelsen har förpackats inuti sin ursprungliga källa ordboken, men i en uppdaterad sådan gällande typografi, layout och helhetsutformning anpassad illustrationerna.
Syftet har varit att ta en, i mitt tycke, åsidosatt källa till kunskap, inspiration och underhållning och maximera dess kapacitet för ökat intresse att lägga tid på, genom att lyfta fram dess redan inneboende egenskaper med hjälp av text, bild och form.
